What is Dyscalculia?
Dyscalculia is defined as someone who has some difficulty performing some aspects of mathematics.
They display confusion over symbols used in mathematics. The symbols used in math are like a language of their own. And all numerals are symbols. They can trigger disorientation just like the alphabet.
For example: 2 x 4 = 6. It is easy to see the disorientation with regards to the symbol x.
Another example: 2 x 6 = 21. The numerals are easily transposed.
Compulsive solutions may be finger counting, memorization songs, and avoidance just to name a few.
A student with dyscalculia may have problems in other areas such as:
Problems with left/right
Following directions
Telling time
Being late/on time
Remembering events in sequential order
These issues can also be addressed during the program depending on motivation.
