What is ADD?

ADD is generally defined as developmentally inappropriate inattention and impulsivity with and without hyperactivity.

This definition almost works.  There is one missing and very important piece and that is spontaneous disorientation.

This disorientation can be triggered by confusion, but also by emotion.  The ADD child may be bored, so he looks out the window and disorients, also known as daydreaming.  He may be curious about the noise he hears outside.  This triggers a disorientation which allows the child to explore the noise.  It is also called being inattentive or easily distractible.

Over stimulation can cause spontaneous disorientation.  For example, going into a department store can over stimulate the senses.  This appears as hyperactivity.

Whatever the cause for disorientation, the result is the same. The ADD child misses the concepts that are learned during childhood.

The child while being disoriented misses the important concepts that one learns by being in the here and now.
